To flexibly respond to unexpected or new challenges, adaptive performance is needed. We introduce performance-based adaptive expertise as measurable learning outcome of transdisciplinary education.

Adaptive expertise is the ability to deal with changing situations that develop in new or unusual directions, while building on routine knowledge. The Peradex consists of design scenarios developed with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and can be used to provide insights into students’ performance-based adaptive expertise.

Peradex has practical implications for education

• Adaptive expertise is a key learning outcome of open and dynamic learning environments, such as transdisciplinary education, beyond more traditional, cognitive learning outcomes
• The Peradex approach offers a formative assessment to monitor students’ adaptive expertise development
• The Peradex can be used across educational levels and knowledge domains

Outcomes of the project

• In the Peradex video, the performance-based adaptive expertise assessment is presented. Frank van Rijnsoever (UU) and Luc de Jongh (UU alumni) explain what adaptive expertise entails and introduce the Peradex. Luc contributed to the EWUU Education research project in his Master thesis and Frank is a professor of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Higher Education for Sustainability. In collaboration with Yvette Baggen, an Associate Professor at Wageningen University & Research, they developed the Peradex approach.
• The scientific publication The Peradex: a performance-based assessment approach for adaptive expertise using design scenarios and artificial intelligence is published in the Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education journal. In this publication, the reliability, validity and background of Peradex is discussed.  
• The Peradex is published in full on Edusources.
• Further, an open-access book chapter will be published about the use of the Peradex in transdisciplinary education as part of the HEErI book series (Higher Engineering Education research & Innovation).
