Thematic Course Packages are carefully curated by EWUU Education to allow students to follow elective courses across the partner institutions, organised around shared themes or societal challenges.
A new package, the Sustainability Transitions in Past and Present package, addresses the long-term dynamics of major societal transitions, such as changes in food production, the use of natural resources, and energy systems. It highlights how understanding historical developments is crucial for informing current sustainability debates.
After following these courses students are equipped with the tools to analyse transitions from an intergenerational perspective, combining different methodological and theoretical approaches to interpret complexity and integrate diverse insights. Thereby gaining an understanding of the interactions between environmental, demographic, economic, political, and technological factors, engaging with key concepts such as path dependence and tipping points, and applying knowledge to real cases through analytical and practice-based assignments.
EWUU Education course packages
From the complementary expertise of the universities students are able to broaden their academic perspective beyond their own programme. In doing so, they deepen subject knowledge while developing interdisciplinary skills that are essential for addressing complex, real-world issues. The packages also support greater student ownership of learning by offering flexible pathways to explore new fields, specialise further, and collaborate across disciplines.
About the Sustainability Transitions in Past and Present course package
This package includes six courses that can be taken throughout the academic year, with most scheduled for the first semester. It is not compulsory to take the full package, allowing students to select the number of courses that suit their interests and fit their schedule. In September 2026, the package will start with two courses; The Great Divergence: Why Some Countries Prosper and Others Don’t, and Sustainability and Resilience in History.
At this moment, two other interinstitutional themed packages have been compiled: Personal and Societal Resilience package and Living Technology course package, with courses throughout the academic year. More packages around are societal challenges and shared themes are being assembled.
