12.45 – Keynote: How can universities drive change for the common good by Geoff Mulgan

In his keynoteHow can universities drive change for the common good‘, Sir Geoff Mulgan (Professor of Collective Intelligence, Public Policy and Social Innovation at University College London) explores the role universities can play in shaping futures that respond to today’s complex societal transitions. He argues that while universities have become highly skilled in analysing the present and the past, their future-shaping role has often been neglected, even though both are essential.

Mulgan discusses how academics can act as partners of civil society, business and government, contributing to social innovation and ambitious programmes for systemic change. Drawing on examples from fields such as care, democracy, welfare and cities, he makes a compelling case for exploratory social science: an approach that brings together science, technology, engineering, the arts and the humanities to expand our collective social possibilities.
