De transitie naar een circulaire samenleving vraagt om onderzoek naar het raakvlak tussen de stad en haar landelijke omgeving. Voor de duurzame ontwikkeling van stad en platteland zijn systemische circulaire oplossingen nodig. De uitdaging is om kringlopen regionaal te sluiten en steden en plattelandsgebieden met elkaar te verbinden. Deze call, deadline 28 april, is uitgezet door het programma Circular Society en bedoeld om nieuwe samenwerking en onderzoek te initiëren en om opschaling van bestaande samenwerking te ondersteunen.
Slimme circulaire innovaties kunnen (sociale) cohesie tussen stad en platteland en regionale economische activiteiten bevorderen en tegelijkertijd verschillende soorten emissies en schaarste in grondstoffen verminderen. Het sluiten van kringlopen op het grensvlak tussen stad en omgeving is alleen succesvol met een integrale technologie-natuur-samenleving benadering. Om echte duurzame circulaire oplossingen voor de samenleving te bieden moeten techniek, sociale inclusie en rechtvaardigheid samenkomen. De alliantie wil de aanpak hiervoor ontwikkelen.
Met deze call wil de alliantie innovatieve ideeën en perspectieven op de ontwikkeling van circulaire en inclusieve steden in samenhang met hun omliggende landelijke gebieden ondersteunen. En daarnaast interne en externe samenwerkingsverbanden stimuleren. Onderzoekers van verschillende disciplines zoals technisch design, AI & data science, ruimtelijke ordening, regelgeving, biologische, chemische en fysische processen, gezondheid en ecologie en natuurlijk sociale processen, waaronder de borging van inclusiviteit, economie, logistiek en gedrag.

Circular challenges
Four circular challenges in urban-rural zones and their cross connections that are addressed:
- Connecting humans and nature in circular – nature based – solutions
- Regional circular services
- Closing nutrients and water cycles
- Circular materials and energy
Within Circular Society the theme Urban-Rural Circularity (URC) has recently been defined. The theme integrates earlier research on ‘circular inclusive cities’ and requests further discussions with researchers and stakeholders. We have formulated an initial version of the background of URC. To be found below.
Budget
The money may be used for extending research time of existing staff (financing substitution of teaching), activities such as (but not limited to) consortium building, organizing stakeholder/dissemination events as well as for hiring temporary researchers. The maximum budget is 30k€ (max 4 grants foreseen) per proposal.
Conditions
We welcome interdisciplinary research ideas, involving academic staff from at least two and preferentially all four institutions. The proposals will be evaluated by a panel with members of at least three alliance partners on research quality, impact potential, and added value of the collaboration. We aim for a quick evaluation of the proposals and a decision well before 9 May.
